Terrapins have begun nesting in Connecticut. Our survey earlier this week revealed several turtle nests that had been dug up by predators looking to snack on eggs. We also observed a female terrapin on land. She did not seem to be interested in attempting to cross the road. We hope that she deposited her eggs and made it safely back into the water. We found the remains of another female terrapin who, sadly, had been struck and killed by a vehicle since the time of our previous survey. Dried-up egg shells among her remains indicate that she did not get to nest before her unfortunate death. Please keep an eye out for turtles and other wildlife in roadways as you drive, particularly if you're passing a wetland.
