The first survey at the Fairfield County hotspot was completed this Monday. There was no evidence that terrapins have become active yet at this site. This is expected for early spring. We want surveys to begin before terrapins are active on land so that the entire scope of the active season is covered. One potential road mortality mitigation option is hinged turtle crossing signs that are closed when turtles are not active, and open when turtles are active. This helps get the attention of drivers and lets them know when they need to use extra caution. If such signs are used here, these surveys would help in determining when signs should be opened and closed. We observed many other species, including two road-killed clapper rail, a passerine, an opossum, and a few very old mammalian carcasses that were documented last season.
